Transforming Robot Production Pipeline Volume 10: Compositing

In this Professional Series course, we will explore some the techniques and concepts used during the compositing of our transforming robot project. We will learn how to deal with issues importing our passes and how to create a missing pass. From there we will learn the basic shuffle and compositing techniques, along with some novel uses of various passes to enhance our composite. We will color correct the foreground and background to match. To ground the vehicle we will create particle effects in NUKEX. Finally we will finish the shot with post effects like flares, lens reflections, lens distortion, blooms, grain, etc. In the end we will have our completed shot in NUKE.

The Merger:
FREEWARE program for timelapse shooters as well as anyone using Magic Lantern for HDR Video with Canon SLRs.

For HDR Timelapse:
The batch merging functionality of the Merger is designed specifically for the needs of HDR timelapse shooters. Most HDR programs out there today are designed for stills, so they make lots of adjustments to optimize the image. However, these optimizations cause flicker since adjacent frames might be processed slightly differently. If you are having trouble dealing with flicker in your HDR timelapse shots then you should try the Merger. And it’s free so why not?

For HDR Video with Magic Lantern:
The Merger is also used for processing video shot with Magic Lantern’s HDR mode. For the uninitiated, Magic Lantern is a great custom firmware for Canon SLRs, including the 5D Mark II.
They recently added an HDR mode where every other frame is shot at a higher or lower ISO. The Merger provides a fully automated algorithm for splitting the movie into a high and low track,
aligning them using optical flow, and merging the results into an HDR video. Or you can merge the tracks manually if you have a thing for masking and keying. Either way, it’s a free option for you.

nukecollect

Job collection script for Nuke

A script that reads Nuke files and collects all the used files to a folder for archiving/transport. All OBJ ReadGeo nodes and %04d numerical input stuff collect as well.

Usage: drag the script into the Terminal window (or copy it to a bin directory and run it like a shell app) and drag in a Nuke scene script. It just uses a simple shell script to read the Nuke file and pare down the Read files and all %04d type things to collect all nodes, OBJ type geometry included. It doesn’t delete anything. The only problem I know of with the script is that it doesn’t like directories with spaces or illegal characters in the name. It does a check to make sure that no duplicate copies will clobber each other so if you have render passes that have the same name (images/diffusepass/render.exr, images/specularpass/render.exr for example), the script tells you that a conflict occurred and nothing is done. Enjoy!

Scratch to Nuke

Demonstration of a SCRATCH to Nuke workflow.

SCRATCH2Nuke is a set of Python based scripts that exhibit the extensibility of SCRATCH through the use of XML. SCRATCH2Nuke (S2N) was developed using Python 2.5 & 2.6, and thus is required in order to use this functionality.

S2N allows you to create a bridge to pass both MetaData and images originating in SCRATCH to Nuke (By The Foundry) and back to Scratch via XML and the Global Watch Folder. Please refresh yourself with Appendix C in the SCRATCH manual before continuing with S2N.

S2N is an open and freely customizable set of scripts available AS-IS. This allows users to adapt the script to your specific workflow, as well and develop your own pipelines based on this example.

Warp Projection – 3D Environments from a 2D Image

From Red Giant TV Episode 65:
In this multidimensional episode of Red Giant TV, designer I’ll walk you through creating a 3D environment from a 2D image, all in After Effects. This won’t be using traditional camera projection techniques – nor will it use vanishing point in photoshop. Instead, I figured out a technique for warping images to build 3D layers. You’ll also learn some great compositing and color correction techniques to finish the job off right.
